Description
MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded specifically within the mitochondrial genome, rather than the nucleus. It represents a new class of peptides known as Mitochondrial Derived Peptides (MDPs). In research settings, MOTS-c is investigated as an “exercise mimetic” due to its ability to translocate to the nucleus and activate the AMPK pathway in skeletal muscle. Researchers utilize MOTS-c to study metabolic flexibility, the regulation of glucose metabolism, and the prevention of diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance.
